Zo is hij de Boeddha van het lange leven. Dit is voor boeddhisten een ideaal omdat zij zo langer in de fortuinlijke wedergeboorte als mens kunnen werken aan de bevrijding van andere wezens en zichzelf. De ingewijde krijgt van zijn Lama de mantra van Amitayus en reciteert die regelmatig met de juiste intentie.
