Er waren eerder al videogame-accessoires die zich op je voeten in plaats van je handen richtten. Van de Power Pad uit de Nintendo Entertainment System-tijd tot de Dance Dance Revolution-dansmat; allemaal stelden ze spelers wereldwijd in staat de benen te gebruiken voor een actievere spelervaring. Maar geen van de eerdere accessoires is vergelijkbaar met Wii Fit en het Wii Balance Board (voorlopige titel), die je woonkamer omvormen in een fitnesscentrum voor de hele familie.

Het spel word geleverd met de Balance Board, een digitale weegschaal die Nintendo speciaal heeft ontwikkeld voor dit spel. Naast het meten van het gewicht, meet het apparaat ook waar op het bord het gewicht zich plaatsvind. Je kunt kiezen uit workouts uit vier verschillende catagorieeen: aerobics, spiertraining, yogahoudingen en balansspelletjes. Wii Fit - zoals de naam al doet vermoeden - houdt je fit!
