Draken zouden geen emoties kennen, heeft Ember altijd geleerd. Hoe kan ze dan zo diep bedroefd zijn nadat Garret zijn leven heeft gegeven om een verschrikkelijk verraad te ontmaskeren? Niets van wat ze ooit geloofde is waar, en ze zweert dat ze samen met rebel Riley in opstand zal komen tegen Talon, de drakendoders van St. Joris en... Dante, haar eigen tweelingbroer - die op het punt staat de grootste verschrikking aller tijden op hen af te sturen. Met de gruwelijke wezens die ze hebben gecreëerd, staan de machthebbers van Talon klaar om de heerschappij over de wereld op te eisen. De duisternis komt steeds dichterbij.
