Wat is het grootste gevaar waar ik mee te maken heb? Ik ben minder bang voor Duitse soldaten dan voor onze eigen oorlog. Al is er nu een wapenstilstand. Soort van. Moeder is weg. En vader ging net bijna van zijn stokje. En ik? Hoe moet ze het redden? Vader is ziek en vertoont geheimzinnig gedrag. Haar zusje glipt telkens onder haar handen vandaan. Haar kleinste broertje is lastiger dan ooit. En moeder is weg ... Toch neemt Mieke haar verantwoordelijkheid. Zo goed en kwaad als het lukt zorgt ze voor het gezin. Daarbij moet ze steeds op haar hoede zijn. Wie kan ze in vertrouwen nemen? Totdat ze een brief van moeder ontdekt. En dan volgen de gebeurtenissen elkaar in hoog tempo op. Zal deze strijd tot overwinning leiden?
