Eerst kwamen de voorlichters en woordvoerders die zich beperkten tot het onderhouden van de logistieke contacten tussen journalisten en politici. Toen volgden de mannetjesmakers en mannetjesmakelaars die de regie over de politieke berichtgeving naar zich toe trokken. Ze fluisterden journalisten goed nieuws in over hun opdrachtgever en verspreidden roddel en achterklap over diens rivalen. Totdat de oorlog tussen de spindoctors niet meer te beheersen viel. Onder het vierde kabinet-Balkenende liep het wederzijdse verbale geweld zo hoog op dat het kabinet eraan ten gronde ging. Superspindoctor Jack de Vries blies zichzelf op.
