Renner met rede

Brabander Koen de Kort (33) zag de Tour de France in 1996 door zijn woonplaats Liempde razen en besloot wielrenner te worden. Zijn missie slaagde en via dubieuze buitenlandse ploegen als Liberty Seguros en Astana kwam hij terecht bij zijn huidige ploeg Giant-Alpecin. Veel aspecten in het wielrennen zijn voer voor discussie. Of het nou de veiligheid is van de renners, de lange, voorspelbare en slaapverwekkende koersen of de eeuwig terugkerende woorden over doping in de sport. Iedereen lijkt de oplossingen te weten, maar de renner wordt nauwelijks iets gevraagd. De Kort vond zijn weg als superknecht en regisseur en droeg zo bij aan de successen van teamgenoten als Marcel Kittel, John Degenkolb en Tom Dumoulin. Hoe sterk is hun band? Vindt hij dat hij genoeg wordt beloond? Is het leuk om knecht te zijn? Maar vooral, wat kan er veranderen om het wielrennen verder te helpen. Het afgelopen seizoen volgde Thomas Sijtsma Koen de Kort. Tijdens de Tour de France trokken ze zelf drie weken lang met elkaar op. Uren spraken zij over zijn leven als coureur en zijn visie op de problemen en de toekomst van de sport. Koen de Kort is een renner met rede.
