Jefferson-bijbel

Met een mesje bewerkte de Amerikaanse president en filosoof Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) de Bijbel. Alle ongeloofwaardige en irrationele passages liet hij eruit: engelen, wonderen, wonderbaarlijke genezingen en de hemelvaart. Voor Jefferson was Jezus geen mystieke genezer die door God werd gezonden, maar een historische figuur, een filosoof met een vernieuwende moraal - de mooiste die de wereld heeft gekend.Slechts met een aantal bevriende Verlichtingsdenkers wisselde hij van gedachte over religieuze zaken. Zij inspireerden hem tot zijn Bijbelproject, die een tekst opleverde die typisch is voor de Verlichting.Jefferson publiceerde zijn bijbel niet, maar hield hem voor zichzelf om er 's avonds in te lezen. Na zijn dood bleef Jeffersons geheime bijbel lang onontdekt. De tekst verschijnt nu voor het eerst in Nederlandse vertaling, met een inleiding van de vertalers.
