In 1894 verscheen het eerste officiële leesplankje RAAM-ROOS-NEEF bij de firma Brinkgreve te Deventer. Dit plankje had twee rijen met in totaal vijftien plaatjes, waaronder de woordjes waren vermeld. De afbeelding bij het woord gat was een echt gat dat in het plankje was geboord in het midden van de bovenste rij. De belangstelling voor het leesplankje, vooral het AAP-NOOT-MIES (getekend door Cornelis Jetses) is vanaf het begin groot geweest. Pas omstreeks 1970 kwam een einde aan het officiële gebruik van leesplankjes in het leesonderwijs.In dit boek wordt u meegenomen op een zwerftocht door de geschiedenis van meer dan twintig leesplankjes.
