Liefde, lijden, lossen

In het jaar dat Jeroen van Bergeijk vijftig wordt, sterft zijn moeder, loopt hij vast in zijn werk en dreigt zijn huwelijk op de klippen te lopen. In een ultieme poging zijn leven weer op orde te krijgen stapt hij op de fiets voor een pelgrimstocht naar Santiago de Compostella. Erover schrijven wil hij niet: om nog een beetje op te vallen tussen alle Compostella-boeken moet je op een ezel naar Santiago, de reis achterstevoren lopen of de bedevaart op hoge hakken volbrengen. Nee, daar doet hij niet aan mee. In Liefde, lijden, lossen, het boek dat hij ondanks zichzelf schreef, beziet Van Bergeijk zijn bestaan als het ultieme cliché. Want met de mensen die hij onderweg naar Spanje ontmoet, is het niet veel anders gesteld dan met hemzelf: iedereen lijkt op drift, eenzaam of verteerd door liefdesverdriet. Al fietsend over de lange weg naar Santiago vraagt hij zich af wat hij onderweg achterlaat.
