Een eenvoudig hart

Voor Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) was het zoeken naar de ongeschreven aspecten van de werkelijkheid wezenlijker dan de romantische schildering van emoties. Deze zichzelf opgelegde eis toonde hij op revolutionaire wijze in zijn eerste gedrukte werk, de roman Madame Bovary uit 1857. Dit boek zorgde zowel voor haat als bewondering, maar Flaubert verzekerde zich van een ereplaats in de eeuwige Bibliotheek van de Wereldliteratuur.Twintig jaar later schreef hij Un coeur simple. Het kleine, formeel strenge werk mocht zich direct in een grote populariteit verheugen. De illustraties zijn van Jean Lébédeff.
