Poëzie is een vrijplaats. In gedichten is altijd ruimte voor hoop, mededogen en vrijheid, zelfs wanneer ze geschreven worden onder regimes of in omstandigheden die hun die hoop en vrijheid willen ontnemen. Naast de vele acties die Amnesty International Nederland de voorbije vijftig jaar ondernam, ontsloot zij ook de culturele rijkdom door dichters van over de hele wereld - vaak voor het eerst in Nederlandse vertaling - in bloemlezingen op te nemen. Dit is de twintigste bloemlezing die onder auspiciën van Amnesty wordt samengesteld, opdat de woorden van vrijheid en schoonheid luider gaan klinken dan die van repressie en wraak.
