Het boek Er dwars doorheen bevat gedachten en gedichten over rouw, alleen staan, oud worden en leren van het leven. De teksten komen uit de dagboeken van Jo Ghijsen (1921), Monica Boschman schreef er gedichten bij. Het is een boek om bij stil te staan. Met woorden die je meevoeren, er dwars doorheen. Jo Ghijsen begon met schrijven toen ze 79 jaar was. In de periode dat haar man overleed en ze alleen verder moest, vertrouwde ze haar gedachten toe aan het papier. Ze bracht het proces van rouwen, ouder worden en loslaten onder woorden op heldere en indringende wijze. De gedichten van Monica Boschman en de illustraties van Marjo Ghijsen versterken de boodschap van het boek. Er dwars doorheen is een intens verhaal.
