Vertaling Pim van der Horst, inleiding Kees Mercks Karel Capek (1890-1938) is een van de belangrijkste Tsjechische schrijvers van de 20ste eeuw. In 1921 brak hij internationaal door met zijn toneelstuk R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots). Hierin werd voor het eerst het woord 'robot' gebruikt, dat zich sindsdien - met het succesvolle toneelstuk - snel over de hele wereld verspreidde. Bijna negentig jaar later verschijnt R.U.R. nu voor het eerst in het Nederlands. In de Slavische Cahiers verschijnen minder bekende werken, soms in tweetalige uitgave, uit de Slavische literaturen.
