Caesar van Everdingen

Caesar van Everdingen is de belangrijkste schilder die Alkmaar in de Gouden Eeuw voortbracht. Hij wordt beschouwd als een van de grote meesters van het Hollands classicisme. Van Everdingen behoorde tot de selecte groep schilders die een bijdrage mocht leveren aan het decoratieprogramma voor de Oranjezaal in Huis ten Bosch. Hij beleefde zijn bloeitijd in Haarlem in de jaren vijftig van de zeventiende eeuw. Van Everdingen schilderde indrukwekkende historiestukken en portretten in een verfijnde, gladde stijl en heldere kleuren. Zijn werken ademen rust en harmonie. De figuren en objecten in zijn composities lijken tastbaar, zo overtuigend gaf hij ze weer. Kunstenaarsbiograaf Arnold Houbraken roemde hem aan het begin van de achttiende eeuw met recht om zijn 'vleiend penseel'. Het is tijd voor een herwaardering van de Alkmaarse meester van het Classicisme. Exact 400 jaar na Caesars geboorte, wordt zijn werk - inclusief nooit eerder getoonde stukken uit particulier bezit - samengebracht in dit boek.
