De term angstpsychose, door Wernicke in 1895 geïntroduceerd, wordt door oudere clinici incidenteel nog gebezigd, maar is voor het overige inmiddels uit het psychiatrische taalgebruik verdwenen. Omdat de relatie tussen angst en psychose vanuit antropologische optiek zo belangwekkend is en omdat de discussies over de angstpsychose in feite nog steeds actueel zijn staan we erbij stil. Wernicke doelt op een vorm van psychotisch beleven waarbij het realiteitsverlies, de hallucinaties en de wanen het gevolg en niet de oorzaak zijn van de angst. Het is zijns inziens de intensiteit van de angst die de psychotische verschijnselen veroorzaakt. Daarmee lijkt Wernicke de angstpsychose als een affectief bepaalde psychose te zien.
