De grote slagen Passchendaele De naam Passchendaele is voor eeuwig verbonden aan het lot van de stad Ieper. Rond deze prachtige historische plaats, met de beroemde lakenhal, was reeds in 1914 een felle strijd losgebarsten. Deze strijd zette zich onvermoeibaar voort in de jaren daarop en zou tot 1918 duren. De beide partijen probeerden hier een doorbraak te forceren, hetgeen tijdens de derde Ieper slag zou uitmonden in de strijd rond Passchendaele. Britse, Belgische en Canadese troepen vochten hier tegen het Duitse leger in de frontboog bij Ieper. Het doel van de Britse generaal Haig was langs de kustlijn op te trekken en de havens van Zeebrugge en Oostende te veroveren. Het gevolg was een uitputtende strijd waarvan de littekens in het landschap nog altijd zichtbaar zijn.
