In de armoede van het histroricisme levert Karl Popper felle kritiek op die denkers, die meenden dat de geschiedenis beheerst wordt door strenge wetten. Hij stelt dat door hen enorm veel ellende is aangericht. Op als belangrijkste argument tegen het in historicisme is, dat de invloed van de kennis - waarvan de ontwikkeling zelf onvoorstelbaar is - op de geschiedenis, deze laatste ook onvoorstelbaar maakt.
