Vijfenzeventig jaar geleden stierf Rudolf Otto na een leven dat gekenmerkt wordt door triomf en tragiek. Verslaafd aan morfine, depressief en gesloopt door malaria kwam er een tragisch einde aan het veelbewogen leven van de Pruisische politicus, theoloog, filosoof en wereldvermaarde godsdienstkenner Louis Karl Rudolf Otto.Vier jaar lang incasseert de fijngevoelige Rudolf Otto het getreiter van Rudolf Bultmann en de hypocrisie van Martin Heidegger. Met het aanzwellen van het laarzengestamp wordt Otto steeds melancholieker. Op een herfstdag in 1936 begint hij aan zijn laatste, eenzame tocht naar de spookachtige ruines van Burg Staufenberg.
