Frankenstein

Op haar negentiende schreef Mary Shelley (1797-1851) haar meesterwerk Frankenstein. Het verhaal, door Shelley bedacht tijdens een avond met vrienden, werd een van de grootste gothic novels allertijden. Het monster van Frankenstein verwierf een eigen plaats in de beeldcultuur. Victor Frankenstein gaat studeren in Duitsland en begint te experimenteren met menselijke overblijfselen. Tot zijn grote verbazing komt het gruwelijke schepsel tot leven. In paniek vlucht Frankenstein weg uit zijn laboratorium. Als hij terugkomt, is het monster verdwenen. Na jarenlang niks meer te hebben vernomen, bereikt Frankenstein het nieuws dat zijn broer is vermoord. De meid Justine wordt verdacht van de moord, maar Frankenstein is ervan overtuigd dat het monster dit op zijn geweten heeft en gaat hem achterna.
