Het lied van Hiawatha

Antropoloog en filosoof Ton Lemaire is bekend van zijn boeken 'Filosofie van het landschap', 'De val van Prometheus' en 'Verre velden'. Op zijn zestiende ontdekte Ton Lemaire het lied van Hiawatha en hij werd direct gegrepen door het ritme van de verzen en de indiaanse wereld die erin werd opgeroepen. Het in 1885 gepubliceerde lange epische gedicht geldt als een van de bekendste teksten van de negentiende eeuw. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow gaf in dit lied poëtische vorm aan de mythische verhalen van de Ojibwa-indianen rond de Grote Meren en maakte zo hun held Hiawatha en de wereld van de indianen literair respectabel. Ton Lemaire beschrijft hoe het lied van Hiawatha uitgroeide tot een nationaal epos waarmee de Verenigde Staten haar culturele identiteit kon bevestigen.
